Please remember, the items on this page are specifically sized for the beagle breed. Different breeds of dogs would still need the same supplies for their homecoming, but might need different sizes.
Supply List :Crate, food, food and water dishes, collar, leash, nametag, chew toys, puppy shampoo, toothbrush and gel, hair brush, ear cleaner, wee wee pads for indoor training, a book on puppy care and behavior, and last but not least, have a veterinarian in place with your pups first scheduled appointment before you bring your new puppy home.
When purchasing a puppy, the crate is one of the most important investments you will make. Before you know it, the crate will become your puppy's safe haven, his pad, his bedroom, his security. This is the crate I have been recommending to all my puppy families for the past few years. It is a good, sturdy crate that comes with, something I consider a must for puppy training, a divider panel. This is the perfect size crate for your beagle from puppy stage to adulthood. Using your free divider will provide a comfortable size crate for your puppy which he will eventually grow into, instead of out-grow. One crate is all you need for every stage of his life. It comes in other sizes, but this is the size I am recommending for your beagle.

After deciding on your crate, you do need to have something comfortable in it for your puppy/dog to lay on. I use the Quiet Time beds. I like them because they're comfy for you puppy and VERY easy to wash. I actually have two. One for use and one for the wash. This is the size I recommend to go with your Lifestages #1630 crate. Although this size will cover the whole bottom of your crate, you'll only use part of it while you're using the puppy divider. The divider can be adjusted to fit over the top of the bed, so the amount of bedding available to your puppy will match the size you adjusted your crate to be with your puppy divider. As the puppy grows and you move the divider back, more of the bed will also be available to your pup, so he'll always have a comfortable bed to lay on.... This works best and saves you money by not having to buy more than one bed as your puppy grows.

If you are thinking about keeping your puppy confined to a certain area or room of your home, you may want to consider a safety gate. I've added the Wee Wee pads to the essentials page, but I would call them more of a convenience than an essential. For the puppy whose crate is blocked off during the day in a specific area of the house with the door open for him to come and go, the wee wee pad is a good tool to use, especially since they are treated to attract your puppy. Never use a wee wee pad to line the bottom of your puppy's crate. This is only defeating the purpose, since you want to discourage your pup from doing his business in his crate. They can be used as a good housebreaking aide, but like everything else, housebreaking takes a lot of time, patience, and dedication. If you have that you're half way there.

If you're going to do a lot of traveling, or just planning on taking your dog/puppy out in the car often, I recommend buying a pet carrier. It's much safer for all concerned rather than leaving your dog loose in the car. It's a terrible distraction and can be extremely dangerous to everyone in the vehicle. If you want to take your pet with you on trips, you need a pet carrier! It's also great to use as a portable crate if you have to leave your dog with a friend or relative over night.

Food and water dishes should be bought with a few things in mind. First off, you don't want your bowls to become your dogs toy, so it needs to be somewhat stationary. Light plastic bowls are very tempting for your puppy to pick up and carry away for a little playtime. A heavier ceramic dish is good because the puppy can't move it, plus spills and tips are less likely to happen. No tip stainless bowls are also a good idea, or food and water dish combos in a holder will work nicely too. It's basically your personal preference. I added these two different types to give you some kind of an idea of what's out there.
The right puppy food is extremely important. All my puppies are fed Purina ProPlan or Purina One until they're one year old. After that they get ProPlan or Purina One for adults. I particularly like feeding them the lamb and rice formula mainly because the lamb is easier for them to digest. ProPlan can not be bought in the grocery store. You must buy it at a feed store, or the major pet stores usually carry it. I have no link for the puppy food itself, but here is a really cool link from Purina you may enjoy. When you first bring your new beagle home you will need no more than an 8" collar. To spend a lot of money on a fancy collar at this point isn't neccesary since your puppy will grow out of it pretty fast. These small adjustable collars are inexpensive and will do the trick until your puppy grows and you want to invest a little more money in a fancier collar.
Basically a nylon leash is all you need for now. Once your pup has had all his shots and you're able to take him for long walks, you might want to switch to a longer retractable leash, but as far as puppy essentials goes, a 6 foot nylon leash is fine for his homecoming.

Bitter Apple is a pretty good biting and chewing deterrent to use during those long puppy months where their teeth can be razor sharp. It's hard getting through that puppy stage when you have small children. Puppy teeth hurt. Please think about this and be sure your family is ready before you purchase your puppy. However, before you buy anything, you might want to try using a STARTLING BARK at your puppy when he's biting your favorite pair of shoes, the coffee table, or even your fingers; believe it or not this really works! Also be sure to purchase plenty of chew toys so you can divert his attention to good biting. Kong toys, rope toys, tugging toys, squeaking toys, even stuffed animal toys are all very popular beginning toys for your puppy.

Natures Miracle is very good for removing the ordor left behind when your puppy has an accident on your carpet. And yes, they are going to have accidents. By removing the ordor your puppy will not be encouraged to repeat the accident in the same spot, plus you do want to make sure you remove the smell permanentaly.

Grooming Necessities
Getting your new beagle puppy used to being groomed at an early age is very important. Doing so will make the tasks of brushing his hair, giving him a bath, clipping his nails, brushing his teeth, and cleaning his ears routine. Making sure this becomes part of his daily and weekly routine is extremely important and believe me, you will have a happier, healthier, more tolerant pet.
Brushing once to twice a week is a must for healthy shinny fur. This is the brush I use and I love it. It gives the dogs body a great work-out and it's excellent for removing any loose hair. My dogs love being brushed, but trust me, it's only because I started them as a puppy.

Beagles do not require many baths. Probably two or three times a year is sufficient, unless you have a hound who loves rolling around in smelly things. A nice warm bath a couple of times a year, especially during the shedding season will help your dog feel like a new hound. Be sure during flea and tick season to bathe him with a shampoo appropriate for dealing with the removal or protection against fleas and ticks. For better protection against these critters, you might want to use a product call Bio Spot, or any similiar product to protect your beagle from fleas, ticks, flies, and their eggs.

Brushing your dogs teeth is not only heathy for his teeth and gums, but it can save you a lot of money down the road. Dental cleanings caused by plaque build-up are very costly to remove, not to mention that teaching your dog to be tolerant during such a task is a great way of reinforcing his self control, something a beagle could have some trouble with.
Good oral hygiene is now recognized as a must for pets and is something your puppy/dog must rely on you for.
Because of the beagles long ears, they could be prone to infections or ear mites, so it is important to keep his ears clean. Once a week checks and cleanings are very important. Start him early and be consistent. Try to keep his ears dry to avoid moisture, which could cause a yeast infection. When bathing be particularly careful not to get water in his ears when washing his neck or head area. Never pour water over his head to rinse!
Use R-7 Ear Pads 2 or 3 times a week to keep the ears clean and reduce ear odors. Use before and after bathng, swimming or hunting. Quantity: 35 pads
Toys
Here are some toys worth looking into. Whether you buy them from the links I've provided you or your local pet store, a must for a new beagle puppy is having plenty of chew toys. Rope toys, chew toys, squeaky toys, balls, stuffed animals; these are all good choices. Beagles love to run, jump, chase, tug, stalk, and stomp upon all kinds of toys. The Kong toys are great too. You can add a treat inside the toy and watch the fun as your puppy plays for hours nibbling at the goodies inside. It aids as a pacifier for your puppy when you need a well deserved break away from all his playful energy, and trust me, beagles have LOTS of energy!
